The subsoil composition allows the retention of water to feed the roots, while the undulating relief of the gravel soils is ideal for drainage. The land, which features quaternary gravel deposits and the large pebbles and sand which are typical of the appellation, is a winemaking paradise. Pauillac, a Médoc appellation, is located approximately 40 kilometres to the north of Bordeaux, on the left bank of the Gironde River. In 1933 the Pichon de Longueville family sold the property to the Bouteiller family, who managed Château Pichon Baron for over 50 years. This uniquely charming and romantic château, with its two emblematic turrets, has stood proudly at the vineyard’s heart ever since.ĭuring the Universal Exhibition of 1855, the wine was classed as a Second Grand Cru Classé according to the ranking system requested by Emperor Napoleon III, who wished to showcase Bordeaux’s great wines. ![]() The second section, belonging to his three sisters, became Pichon Comtesse.īaron Raoul was proud of his prestigious property, and in 1851 he commissioned the imposing château inspired by Renaissance architecture that we know today. Baron Raoul Pichon de Longueville’s section became the Pichon Baron estate. This period was known as the Grand Siècle, or “great century”, in reference to Louis XIV’s 1661 accession to the French throne. The estate was founded in the late 17th Century. The wine produced here was classified as one of fifteen Deuxièmes Crus (Second Growths) in the original Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. Château Pichon Longueville Baron is also the name of the red wine produced by this property. In 2007, control passed on to Champagne Louis Roederer, a family-owned company managed by Frédéric Rouzaud. In 1925, the Miailhe family took over, and the global reputation of the estate only continued to grow thanks to the quality of its wine. Shortly after, in 1855, the château was classified as a Second Growth. In 1850, Virginie de Pichon Longueville, Comtesse de Lalande, and her sisters inherited some 30 hectares and grew the magnificent estate that still bears her name. Through his work and commitment over 70 years, Joseph built a magnificent estate. Born in 1760, in the reign of Louis XV, Joseph de Pichon-Longueville witnessed France’s three revolutions, five kings, two republics, and one empire. Founded by Pierre de Rauzan in 1689, it has been owned by the Pichon-Longueville family since 1694. The 2014 Pichon-Lalande has a well-defined tannic structure worthy of great Pauillac, in balance with a very "Comtesse" complex aromatic expression.Ĭhâteau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of Bordeaux’s greatest wine estates. Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot developed great aromatic complexity. The grapes really delivered: the Merlot is powerful and generous, the Cabernet Sauvignon perfectly mature. The 2014 in particular went through a long and hot summer, and the estate's longest harvest to date. Deep but precise, it reveals more with every sniff and every sip. Floral, fruity and spicy, it has the power of Pauillac and the grace of the namesake Comtesse.
